I sooooooo do not want to install baby gates on our stairs. We don't have standard walls around our stairs and it will require someone handy to figure out how to do it. I'm envisioning extra boards, lots of drilling, drywall repair - yuck! 
But today Ellary climbed 2 stairs. That's what I get for trying to sit high on the stairs and take her picture while she played in the foyer. She will do whatever it takes to get to her mommy!

Here's hoping there is something, in those big baby stores, that will make "step protection" easier than what you mentioned having to do. And this too shall pass before you know it. :)
